Sciatica

The best way to treat sciatica is with NSAIDs, applied cold or heat to the area and a stretching exercise program.

Sciatica

Sciatica is a relatively common condition that causes pain and burning along the path of the sciatic nerve — typically from the lower back which radiates to the hips, buttocks and down the back of the legs. This condition usually only affects one side of the body. Sciatica is almost always treated conservatively. NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), applied cold or heat to the area and a stretching exercise program are often first-line therapy for adequate pain relief (you can find a good hip stretching home exercise program under our “Home Exercise Program” section). Occasionally, a short course of oral steroids may be prescribed in severe cases. It is important to note that symptom relief is gradual and may take several weeks or months to fully resolve. You should see your doctor if symptoms persist, if the pain is severe and numbness or weakness present in your leg, or if you have trouble controlling your bowels or bladder.
