The elbow brings together the upper arm bone (humerus) and the two bones of the forearm (radius and ulna). Allowing for the bending and straightening of the arm as well as the rotation of the forearm, it is pivotal to the performance of a wide variety of movements and activities ranging from daily tasks to high-level athletics.

The elbow joint is supported by muscles, tendons, and ligaments—rope-like bands of tissue that connect bones together. When one or more of these ligaments become damaged, this is known as an elbow sprain.

Elbow sprains are a common injury that can range from mild to severe. If you are dealing with an elbow injury that you suspect may be a sprain, the world-class team of specialists at Modern Orthopaedics of New Jersey can help. Contact our clinic today to schedule an appointment and receive a definitive diagnosis and personalized treatment plan!

What Is An Elbow Sprain?

An elbow sprain is an injury to one or more of the ligaments that connect and support the bones in the elbow joint. Its symptoms include pain, swelling, and limited range of motion in the elbow, often making it difficult to distinguish from other types of elbow injuries, such as fractures and strains, without a thorough medical examination.

Elbow sprains can be caused by forcible twisting or bending movements, a fall onto an outstretched arm, a sports injury, overuse, a car accident, or other traumatic injury. They often resolve on their own or with conservative treatment approaches, but elbow surgery may be necessary in cases where ligaments are severely torn.

Elbow sprains are categorized into 3 grades:

  • Grade 1 – One or more elbow ligaments are stretched but not torn. This grade of elbow sprain usually still allows for painful movement of the joint.
  • Grade 2 – One or more elbow ligaments are partially torn. This grade of elbow sprain is usually characterized by severe pain and loss of range of motion.
  • Grade 3 – One or more elbow ligaments is completely torn through. This grade of elbow sprain usually involves intense pain and very little mobility in the elbow joint.

Symptoms & Diagnosis

The symptoms of an elbow fracture overlap with those of many other elbow conditions. For this reason, a specialized examination is usually necessary to rule out other possible causes of elbow pain and discomfort. Imaging tests including X-rays, ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI may also be ordered to better visualize the affected area and make a definitive diagnosis.

Common symptoms of elbow sprains include the following:

  • Pain when bending and straightening the arm, rotating the forearm, or applying pressure to the elbow
  • Swelling, redness, and/or bruising around the elbow
  • Limited range of motion in the elbow joint

Non-Surgical Treatment Options

The majority of elbow sprains can be effectively treated with non-surgical approaches including the following:

  • Rest and activity modifications
  • Icing
  • Physical therapy
  • Immobilization (brace, sling)
  • Medication for pain and/or inflammation

Surgical Treatment Options

In cases where elbow ligaments have been severely damaged or torn (grade 2 or 3 sprain), a surgical procedure may be recommended to repair them. At Modern Orthopaedics of New Jersey, our award-winning team of orthopedic surgeons specializes in minimally invasive techniques for ligament reconstruction. Schedule a consultation to speak directly with one of our expert doctors and learn more about which elbow pain treatment may be the right fit for your needs and health goals.
