The knee joint connects the upper and lower leg and is essential for virtually all forms of movement—walking and running, cycling, swimming, bending, stretching, lifting, balancing, jumping, and much more. When knee pain occurs, the impacts on mobility and quality of life can be significant and take a toll on everything from the performance of daily routines and activities to high-level competitive athletics.

At Modern Orthopaedics of New Jersey, our world-class team of orthopedic doctors specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of knee conditions and injuries of every kind. Arthroscopic knee surgery (knee arthroscopy) is a common surgical procedure that allows for in-depth visualization and repair of the knee joint’s structures. It may be recommended in cases where damage is extensive or conservative treatment approaches have failed to alleviate knee pain.

Safe and minimally invasive, a knee arthroscopy procedure can provide valuable diagnostic information that leads to the development of a customized treatment plan. Often, the repair of injured soft tissues and bones and/or the removal of damaged or inflamed tissues can be performed as an extension of the original exploratory procedure.

For further information about knee arthroscopy and to learn whether or not this procedure may be recommended based on your particular needs and treatment goals, schedule an appointment at Modern Orthopaedics of New Jersey today!

What Is Knee Arthroscopy?

Knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that offers a safer, less painful alternative to traditional open surgery. A tiny light and camera inserted into the knee through a small incision project images from inside the knee joint onto a screen in the operating room where they can be carefully evaluated. Based on these images, the surgical team can make (or confirm) a diagnosis and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

If further surgical treatment is indicated, other small incisions may be made and damaged tissues repaired or removed using tiny, flexible tools. Afterward, all incisions are carefully closed and the recovery process can begin.

What Conditions Can Be Treated By Knee Arthroscopy?

Arthroscopic knee surgery can be used to effectively treat a wide range of different knee conditions and injuries, including:

  • Cartilage tears or damage
  • Loose bone or cartilage
  • Ligament tears (ACL, MCL, PCL)
  • Damaged meniscus
  • Patellar tendonitis
  • Bursitis
  • Bone fracture
  • Misaligned kneecap
  • Synovium (inflammation of the soft tissue on the inside of the knee joint)
  • Undiagnosed knee pain that doesn’t resolve with conservative treatment options such as rest, icing, pain management, and/or physical therapy

Multiple injuries or damaged tissues can be resolved in a single knee arthroscopy, but the procedure is not generally recommended for pain stemming from arthritis of the knee.

What Are Postoperative Care And Recovery Like?

As with any surgery, a period of recovery is required after a knee arthroscopy procedure. Following an initial few days of elevating the knee and limiting weight-bearing, the length of recovery depends on a variety of factors:

  • The age and overall health of the patient
  • The extent of injury or damage
  • The type and scope of repairs that were arthroscopically performed

For more accurate information about projected postoperative care and recovery times based on the specifics of your case, schedule an appointment at Modern Orthopaedics of New Jersey to consult directly with one of our award-winning doctors.
