Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is characterized by symptoms such as pain/numbness/tingling in the hands and weakness when gripping. Treatment may range from bracing or corticosteroid injections to surgery.

Wrist Arthritis

Wrist arthritis may occur post-traumatically or as a result of inflammation or osteoarthritis. The condition can often be managed conservatively with bracing, NSAIDs, and cortisone injections, but a partial or total wrist fusion, four-corner fusion, or other wrist surgery may be considered in severe cases.

Trigger Finger Release

If you experience bothersome clicking/locking of your finger or difficulty straightening it and conservative treatment options have not resolved the issue, it may be time to consider a percutaneous or open trigger finger release.

Wrist Tendonitis

Wrist tendonitis generally presents with pain over the thumb side of the wrist triggered by movements such as lifting, pinching, or grasping. The condition can often be managed conservatively, but De Quervain’s Tendon Release surgery may be recommended, depending on the circumstances.

Shoulder Injury Treatment

Our innovative shoulder treatments range from conservative treatment plans to total shoulder replacement surgery. Learn more below about some of the common shoulder injuries and conditions we treat:

Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder is a condition characterized by shoulder pain and loss of motion, usually between the ages of 40-60. Surgical intervention is rare and the condition is usually treated with cortisone injections and extensive physical therapy.

Shoulder Dislocation

Shoulder Dislocations are common injuries. They can occur in patients of all ages, but are especially frequent in young student athletes. These injuries often occur from direct trauma to the shoulder area during sport when trauma occurs to the shoulder while it’s in an awkward position. At times these injuries can spontaneously reduce (go back in place) at the time of the injury, while other times they require the patient to visit the emergency room to have the shoulder relocated. Even when the shoulder is put back in place successfully, there are labral tears and possible fractures that should be evaluated. While non-operative care is often possible, sometimes surgical repair of these structures can give the shoulder the best chance to be as close to normal as possible for the future. Our surgeons at Modern Orthopaedics are shoulder experts who will examine your shoulder and perform advanced imaging with X-ray and MRI. Each shoulder dislocation can have a unique pattern that determines the patient’s risk of re-dislocation in the future. Our experts will help you come up with a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Rotator Cuff Tears

At Modern Orthopaedics of New Jersey, our shoulder experts often treat partial-thickness rotator cuff tears using conservative treatment approaches and perform minimally invasive arthroscopic rotator cuff repair surgery to address full-thickness tears.

Shoulder Impingement

Shoulder impingement is a painful condition that occurs when the muscles of the rotator cuff become irritated/inflamed and pinched beneath the top outer edge of the shoulder blade. In severe cases, subacromial decompression surgery may be recommended.

Cervical Spine Treatments

At Modern Orthopaedics of New Jersey, our cervical spine specialist treats neck conditions that cause pain, stiffness, numbness, or weakness radiating into the shoulders and arms. We focus on determining whether a nerve or the spinal cord itself is involved, then build a cervical spine treatment plan that begins with conservative care and moves to surgical options only when non-operative treatment has been exhausted.

Neck Pain

Neck pain can come from muscle strain, posture, arthritis, or a problem in the discs and joints of the cervical spine. Most cases improve with activity modification, physical therapy, and targeted injections. We start by identifying whether the pain is mechanical or nerve-related, because the two are treated very differently.

Cervical Radiculopathy (Pinched Nerve)

Cervical radiculopathy occurs when a nerve root is compressed by a herniated disc or bone spur, sending pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness down the shoulder and arm into the hand. Symptoms usually follow a specific pattern that tells us which nerve level is involved. Many patients improve without surgery through physical therapy, medication, and epidural steroid injections.

Cervical Myelopathy

Cervical myelopathy is compression of the spinal cord itself, not just a nerve root. Early warning signs include clumsiness with buttons or handwriting, dropping objects, and changes in balance or walking. Because myelopathy tends to progress over time, early diagnosis matters — surgical decompression is often recommended to prevent further loss of function.

Cervical Disc Herniation

A cervical disc herniation happens when the soft inner material of a disc pushes through its outer wall and presses on a nearby nerve root or the spinal cord. It commonly causes neck pain alongside radiating arm symptoms. A large share of herniations settle down with non-operative care over several weeks to months.

Cervical Spondylosis

Cervical spondylosis is age-related wear in the neck — loss of disc height, bone spurs, and arthritis in the small facet joints. It is extremely common and frequently causes no symptoms at all. When it does, treatment focuses on managing stiffness and pain and addressing any nerve compression the degeneration has created.

Cervical Fusion & Disc Replacement

When conservative care is not enough, we offer both anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) and cervical artificial disc replacement. Fusion joins two vertebrae to eliminate motion at a painful or unstable level, while disc replacement removes the damaged disc and preserves neck motion. Which option fits depends on your age, the number of levels involved, and the condition of the surrounding segments.

Low Back Pain

Low back pain is the most common reason patients see a spine specialist, and most of it is mechanical rather than structural. We rule out red flags first, then work through activity modification, physical therapy, and injections. Imaging is ordered when the history and exam suggest it will actually change the treatment plan.

Lumbar Radiculopathy (Sciatica)

Lumbar radiculopathy results from nerve irritation or compression in the lower back, leading to symptoms such as pain, numbness, or weakness that radiates into the legs or feet. Our spine team provides both non-surgical and surgical treatment options, depending on the severity of symptoms.

Lumbar Spondylolisthesis

Lumbar spondylolisthesis occurs when a vertebra shifts out of alignment with the vertebra below it, which can cause lower back pain and sometimes nerve symptoms in the legs. Treatment may include conservative or surgical options, depending on the severity of the condition.

Lumbar Disc Herniation

A lumbar disc herniation is one of the leading causes of sciatica, occurring when disc material extrudes and contacts a nerve root in the lower back. Pain is typically worse with sitting, bending, and coughing. Most herniations improve without surgery, and microdiscectomy is reserved for persistent symptoms or progressive weakness.

Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the canal that carries the nerves through the lower back, usually caused by arthritis, thickened ligaments, and bulging discs. The hallmark symptom is leg pain and heaviness with walking or standing that eases when you sit down or lean forward. Treatment ranges from physical therapy and injections to decompression surgery.

Lumbar Fusion Surgery

Lumbar fusion joins two or more vertebrae into a single stable segment, and is used for instability, spondylolisthesis, and severe degeneration that has not responded to other care. It is frequently combined with a decompression to relieve pressure on the nerves. We reserve fusion for patients with a clear structural problem that matches their symptoms.
