Distal Biceps Rupture
Distal Biceps Rupture Treatment and Surgery in Wayne & Paramus, NJ
A rupture of the distal biceps tendon occurs near the elbow, where the tendon attaches the biceps muscle to the radius bone.
This injury is typically caused by a sudden, forceful contraction of the biceps, often during lifting. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and weakness in the elbow, and a “Popeye” deformity may appear due to the biceps muscle retracting toward the shoulder. Diagnosis is confirmed with physical examination and imaging, such as MRI, which provides a detailed view of the tendon. Treatment depends on the extent of the rupture and the patient’s activity level. Non-surgical management may be considered for patients with lower activity demands. However, most cases require surgical repair, where the tendon is reattached to the bone. Surgery is typically done through an open incision or minimally invasive techniques.
