Neck pain and nerve-related symptoms that affect the shoulders, arms, and hands can make everyday activities difficult and negatively impact quality of life. When symptoms fail to improve with conservative care, cervical spine surgery may offer an effective path forward toward reduced pain, restored mobility, and improved daily function.

At Modern Orthopaedics of New Jersey, our orthopedic spine specialist focuses on minimally invasive cervical spine procedures and creates personalized treatment plans tailored to the unique anatomy, symptoms, and mobility goals of each patient. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Pyun today to learn if you are a candidate for cervical spine surgery and discover treatment options designed to meet your individual needs.

Types Of Cervical Spine Surgeries We Offer

The cervical spine, commonly known as the neck, is made up of seven small vertebrae (C1-C7) that provide support for the head, protect the spinal cord, and allow for a wide range of motion. Intervertebral discs between the cervical vertebrae absorb shocks and enable flexibility of movement. Nerves that branch out from the spinal cord through openings between the cervical vertebrae carry signals to and from the shoulders, arms, and hands.

When the vertebrae, discs, or other structures associated with the cervical spine become injured, lose stability, degenerate, or are otherwise damaged, nerve compression may occur, resulting in symptoms such as pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness in the upper extremities. Depending on the location, severity, and underlying cause of the issue, our fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon may recommend one of the following procedures:

Anterior Cervical Discectomy Fusion

Anterior cervical discectomy fusion (ACDF) surgery relieves disc-related nerve compression while also stabilizing the affected vertebrae. The procedure is commonly recommended for patients experiencing severe symptoms caused by disc herniation, degenerative disc disease (DDD), or other disc-related problems.

During ACDF surgery, the damaged disc is removed, and a bone graft is placed to allow the affected vertebrae to gradually fuse together. Surgical hardware, such as a plate and screws will be used to improve spinal alignment and stability.

Posterior Cervical Laminoplasty

Posterior cervical laminoplasty relieves pressure caused by spinal stenosis or other conditions that narrow the spinal canal and compress the spinal cord in the cervical region of the spine.

During a posterior cervical laminoplasty procedure, the surgeon reshapes the lamina – the protective bony arch forming the back of each vertebra – to enlarge the spinal canal while still preserving the stability of the spine.

Posterior Cervical Laminectomy and Fusion

Like laminoplasty, posterior cervical laminectomy relieves nerve compression in the neck caused by spinal stenosis, bone spurs, or other conditions that place pressure on the spinal cord and nearby nerve roots.

Instead of reshaping the lamina, the surgeon removes part or all of it to create more space for the spinal cord and nerves.  Surgical hardware, such as screws and rods will be used to improve spinal alignment and stability.  Posterior cervical laminectomy and fusion surgery can help relieve pain, numbness, or weakness in the arms and hands.

Cervical Disc Replacement

Cervical disc replacement surgery replaces a severely damaged intervertebral disc with a specialized prosthesis that allows the neck to retain flexibility. For appropriately selected patients, the procedure can offer an excellent alternative to fusion surgery that doesn’t increase stress on the adjacent discs.

Cervical Corpectomy

Cervical corpectomy is typically considered only in cases where nerve compression symptoms are severe and haven’t improved with less invasive approaches.

During the procedure, the surgeon removes one or more vertebral bodies – the thick portion of bone at the front of each vertebra – along with their associated intervertebral discs. These structures are replaced with a bone graft or cage and secured with surgical hardware to stabilize the cervical spine and help maintain proper alignment.

When Cervical Spine Surgery Is Recommended

At Modern Orthopaedics of New Jersey, our experienced spine specialist always prioritizes the least invasive approach possible, only considering surgical intervention in cases where cervical symptoms are persistent and severe despite conservative treatment.

Conditions we commonly treat with cervical spine surgery include:

  • Herniated discs
  • Degenerative disc disease (DDD)
  • Spinal arthritis (bone spurs)
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Fractures or other traumatic injuries

Cervical spine surgery may be recommended in cases where the patient:

  • Has persistent neck or arm pain that limits everyday activities
  • Experiences radiating numbness, tingling, or weakness in the shoulder, arm, or hand
  • Has evidence of nerve compression, spinal instability, or structural abnormalities on imaging tests

Good Candidates For Cervical Spine Surgery

Before moving forward with cervical spine surgery, Dr. Pyun and the orthopedic spine team at Modern Orthopaedics of New Jersey will carefully review your symptoms, medical history, and overall health to determine whether you’re a suitable candidate. While every case is unique, patients are often considered good candidates for cervical spine surgery when they meet the following criteria:

  • Symptoms are severe, persistent, and haven’t improved with conservative care
  • Are in generally good health and able to tolerate surgery and the associated recovery
  • Are committed to following post-operative protocols and actively participating in the rehabilitation process

Dr. Pyun is more than happy to answer any specific questions about your eligibility for cervical spine surgery and help guide you toward the most appropriate procedure.

    • The length of the surgery depends on the type of procedure.

    After Surgery

    • Clear instructions will be provided for pain management, wound care, and activity guidelines.
    • Physical therapy and an at-home exercise regimen are an essential part of the recovery and rehabilitation process.
    • Recovery times range from a few weeks to a few months, depending on the type of procedure as well as the age and overall health of the patient.
